Scientific Description
Aiming at taking up the challenge of the integral development of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical sector, TUNISIA set up a prospective strategy by the mobilization of programs and adequate resources. Nearly 50% of the potentialities of research in TUNISIA (structures, researchers, financing) are dedicated to the fields of sciences biological and biotechnology and 30% of Tunisian patents are recorded in the triadic offices:
Training
- 4 higher institutes of Biotechnology.
- 2 higher institutes of applied Biology.
- 1 Faculty of Pharmacy.
- 3 089 researchers-students in Biology and Biotechnology.
- 2 430 researcher-teachers
Scientific research:
- 3 specialized research establishments.
- 388 Research laboratories and Units in Life sciences and Biotechnology.
Sectoral Description:
Pharmaceutical Industry profits from a special attention from Authorities:
A legal and lawful framework governing manufacture (rules of good manufacturing practice GMP), the recording (AMM), and the marketing of drugs.
Administrative structures of management, analysis, control of the pharmaceutical products, drugs (Direction of pharmacy and drug, National Laboratoire of Control of the Drugs which are collaborator centers of WHO) and inspection of the manufacturing units.
Incentives to investment:
- Freedom of transfer.
- Protection of the intellectual property.
- Reduction of customs duties to the minimum for the equipment.
- Exemption of the customs duties for the raw materials and the packaging items.
- An advantageous rate of VAT (6°/°).
This allowed:
- A development of the pharmaceutical industrial layer which increased to 43 units in 2008, employing 5025 employees, of which 27 units specialized in the production of the human medicines.
- An increase in investment which reached 400 million dinars.
- A progression of the cover rate of the national consumption to 47% in 2008.
- In 2008, the exports reached 26 millions of dinars, and that, toward Arabian, African and European countries.
